In the EV Mode, the vehicle is driven by the two electric motors, with energy being supplied exclusively by the lithium-ion drive battery pack (100 percent electric-powered, zero-emission vehicle). This mode is excellent for running daily errands while having a low environmental impact. The EV mode button can be selected for 100% EV driving, if desired.
Regenerative braking occurs when the vehicle is in motion while the accelerator pedal is not being pressed (coasting) or when the driver engages the brakes by pressing the brake pedal. On Outlander PHEV, regenerative braking is used to convert kinetic energy into electricity for the drive battery. Controlled via the steering mounted paddle shifters, you can increase or reduce coasting to your liking to charge up the drive battery.
The Outlander PHEV automatically chooses the most efficient driving mode from EV mode, Series Hybrid mode and Parallel Hybrid mode. But, there are three driver selected modes to enhance performance. Battery Charge mode can be selected to force the engine to charge the lithium-ion battery pack up to 80 percent capacity in approximately 40 minutes. Battery Save mode can be activated for highways, where engine use is more efficient, saving the battery for residential areas. EV Priority, or Eco Mode, reduces fuel and electricity when possible and deactivates when further power is needed.
